Grayson, KY High school seniors release 10,000 crickets into halls, get banned from graduation

crickets(NY Daily News) – High school seniors were banned from graduation after releasing 10,000 crickets into its halls as a prank.

East Carter High School in Grayson, Ky., stopped seven students from attending Saturday morning’s celebration because of the cost of the cleanup.

Principal Larry Kiser said the creepy critters were still hiding in nooks and crannies several days later — which meant costly exterminators, had to be called in.

Not everyone thought the 10,000 crickets were a big deal. ‘It could be worse. What other kind of bugs are there?’ one mom asked.

And he revealed the students would not receive their diplomas until they had coughed up a collective $600 fine.

Fellow seniors criticized the “harsh” punishment.

“We’ve been to school with them since we were in diapers. It’s not fair to us to not have them there with us,” Alissa Lawson told WSAZ.

Students were told they would not be getting their diplomas until they coughed up a $600 fine.

“It could be worse. What other kinds of bugs are in there?” added mom of one of the students Rhonda Parsons.

Even Robin Webb, a state senator who attended the school, sided with the jokers.

“Graduation is one of those lifetime milestones and these kids with no previous records of any sort, I think it’s a little overreaching,” he added.

But Carter County School District is standing by its actions.

“It is the stance of the Carter County School District that these actions, while meant to be a prank of sorts, are unacceptable,” a statement said.

Yahoo Tumblr Deal Is Officially Announced: Marissa Mayer ‘Promises Not To Screw It Up’

tumblr(Huffington Post) – After a weekend of rumors, it’s official. In a press release issued Monday, Yahoo announced that it will acquire Tumblr for $1.1 billion in cash. Aware that Yahoo has not managed previous acquisitions, like that of photo-sharing site Flickr or web-hosting service GeoCities, very well, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Internet company promised “not to screw it up” this time around.

To preserve the quirkiness that Tumblr users fear will be lost with the acquisition, Tumblr will be “independently operated as a separate business,” the press release stated, with 26-year-old David Karp remaining the popular blogging platform’s CEO. “The product, service and brand will continue to be defined and developed separately with the same Tumblr irreverence, wit, and commitment to empower creators.”

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer wrote a post on the Yahoo’s Tumblr page (titled: “Tumblr. + Yahoo! = !!”) in an attempt to assuage fears and prove how young and hip she is. At the top of the post is a big GIF that flashes “Yahoo,” then “Tumblr” then “Now Panic And Freak Out” before finally landing on “Keep Calm And Carry On.” Young people love GIFs, right?

Mayer goes on to say how exciting the deal is for both companies. Yahoo will get more content and visitors, and Yahoo can help Tumblr with search:

In terms of working together, Tumblr can deploy Yahoo!’s personalization technology and search infrastructure to help its users discover creators, bloggers, and content they’ll love. In turn, Tumblr brings 50 billion blog posts (and 75 million more arriving each day) to Yahoo!’s media network and search experiences. The two companies will also work together to create advertising opportunities that are seamless and enhance user experience.

Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp also made a celebratory post, explaining to Tumblr users that nothing about their beloved site will change. The newly minted centimillionaire signed the post, “Fuck yeah, David.”

Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission – to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve – certainly isn’t changing.

Karp explains that Yahoo will enable Tumblr to “get better faster.” Plus, he writes, the “both our logos end with punctuation!” Remember, everyone, it’s technically Yahoo! (ending in an exclamation point) and Tumblr. (ending in a period).

Japanese scientists create device to transmit scents via smartphones

keep-your-nose-out-of-my-business(Pravda.ru) – Japanese scientists have invented a device that is capable of transmitting odors at a distance. The miniature pink device called The Scentee, created by ChatPerf, connects to your phone and emits desired odors at the time when a person plays games, watches videos. Various smells are enclosed in small plastic containers that are installed in the lower part of The Scentee adapter.

The adapter is currently available for Apple iPhones. The Android version is expected to be released in September. The adapter also makes it possible to send scents to someone else in a text message or an email.

The invention has arrived 1.5 months after Google’s April Fool’s Day prank called Google Nose.

Yahoo Tumblr Purchase Approved By Board

tumblr(WSJ) – Yahoo’s board of directors has approved a deal to buy the popular blogging platform Tumblr, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the WSJ, it will pay $1.1 billion in cash for the site. The potential purchase was originally reported by the technology blog AllThingsD on Thursday, which also cited the same cash figure. AllThingsD also confirmed the board’s approval on Sunday.

Yahoo is holding a press conference in New York, Tumblr’s hometown, on Monday where the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Internet company is widely expected to announce the acquisition.

Forbes reported on Saturday that Tumblr’s board also approved the purchase.

The deal to buy the blogging website popular with young people, a demographic Yahoo that Yahoo has had trouble reaching, will be the largest acquisition of CEO Marissa Mayer’s tenure. The former Google executive took over the reins of the struggling Internet company in 2012 and hasn’t been afraid to make splashy acquisitions. In March, Yahoo bought Summly, a news-summarization app created by a 17-year-old, for a rumored $30 million.

This story is developing.

Bitcoin threatens economic monopoly, bolsters free speech

bitcoins2(RT) – Bitcoin threatens both the financial elite’s monopoly over the economy and the online web of payment systems which have been used as a tool to crack down on free speech on the Internet, Amir Taaki, a bitcoin software developer, told RT.

On Wednesday, The US Department of Homeland Security seized a payment processing account belonging to Mt. Gox, the largest international Bitcoin trader over claims the monetary exchange service had falsified financial documents.

The US government has never hidden the fact that it is closely watching the virtual currency, which international regulators have thus far failed to keep a lid on.

But while banks and governments have treated the Bitcoin payment system as an “existential threat” to current financial system, Taaki argues that the virtual currency epitomizes real free trade and is a necessary tool to maximize the benefits of a free and open market.

RT: You’re at the heart of the Bitcoin system – could you explain for us in a nutshell how Bitcoin works, and why anyone would want to take part?

Amir Taaki: The basic gist of it is, there is this network of people worldwide, and any person that joins the Bitcoin network is responsible for upholding it.  The Bitcoin is actually a form of money, like the dollar, euro or pound, but it’s virtual currency on the Internet. It is a type of currency which is not overseen by central banks, governments or states, and there are no restrictions on how you can use it. You can send it to anyone, anywhere in the world.  A person can download Bitcoin software, get set up with it in five minutes, and start accepting payments from Iran or North Korea. It’s proper free trade, not the fake kind where you need to register corporations or companies, and then you’re shut out of the market because of regulations: No! It’s the kind of money where anybody in the world can participate. It might be alright in the West, when anybody can set up an account and get a Visa or Mastercard, but it’s not the same. Paypal alone is blocking access from over 60 different countries worldwide. Bitcoin does not have any of these restrictions or limitations. The payment system is used as a political tool to shut down speech on the Internet, and that’s why the Bitcoin is so important.

RT: Still, to many people the whole Bitcoin system seems to be very complex – how do we know that it’s safe and can be trusted?

AT: The Bitcoin system is a really simple system because it’s based off this concept of open source.  I can download the source code for Bitcoin and you can read through it. It’s like how someone [can read] French or Spanish or English – I can read the source code and see that it does exactly what it says it does.  It’s something really powerful when I have Bitcoins stored on my computer and I send it over the Internet direct to someone without any middleman whatsoever using software that I wrote myself, completely. When I have a bank account, I don’t know what happens in that bank account.  I don’t know who I’m dealing with or all the middlemen and institutions there. Bitcoin has none of that. It’s total control over your money.

RT: As we’ve heard, the U.S. government has raided a business involved in Bitcoin transactions – could it stop BitCoin althogether, if it was determined to do so?

AT: No, and this is actually great news. So far they’ve been moving covertly, in the shadows, pushing Bitcoin here and there, and this is the first time they’ve actually played their hand and made a move against Bitcoin that’s out there in the public. Bitcoin is a tool which threatens the powers of all of these institutions which have the economy rigged [in their favor]. Yesterday, I was in Canary Wharf, there are these police and they’re not even real police. They look like police, they dress like police but they’re not – they’re security guards. And they were going around harassing us when we were going to the FCA [Financial Conduct Authority] to ask questions. They will make moves against Bitcoin, because it does threaten this power that they have; this monopoly over the economy.

But Bitcoin is a tool, which, if done right, cannot be censored. You can’t stop people from doing trade with each other. It’s a proper tool for free trade. I’ve been saying for a long time that we need to build Bitcoin in the underground market and things like what has just happened in the US prove this is true. We need a foundation for Bitcoin, and the underground economy doesn’t only mean drugs or guns or weapons. It means normal things like people doing trade with each other – local business sending goods to each other and trading. There’s a lot more to the underground economy than just the common picture which is painted out there. It’s something which allows people to progress and to actually create the kind of wealth and business that should be possible in a truly free market.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in ‘crack cocaine’ video scandal

rob ford(Toronto Star) – A cellphone video that appears to show Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine is being shopped around Toronto by a group of Somali men involved in the drug trade.

Two Toronto Star reporters have viewed the video three times. It appears to show Ford in a room, sitting in a chair, wearing a white shirt, top buttons open, inhaling from what appears to be a glass crack pipe. Ford is incoherent, trading jibes with an off-camera speaker who goads the clearly impaired mayor by raising topics including Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and the Don Bosco high school football team Ford coaches.

“I’m f—ing right-wing,” Ford appears to mutter at one point. “Everyone expects me to be right-wing. I’m just supposed to be this great.…” and his voice trails off. At another point he is heard calling Trudeau a “fag.” Later in the 90-second video he is asked about the football team and he appears to say (though he is mumbling), “they are just f—ing minorities.”

The Star had no way to verify the authenticity of the video, which appears to clearly show Ford in a well-lit room. The Star was told the video was shot during the past winter at a house south of Dixon Rd. and Kipling Avenue. What follows is an account based on what both reporters viewed on the video screen. Attempts to reach the mayor and members of his staff to get comment on this story were unsuccessful.

A lawyer retained by Ford, Dennis Morris, said that Thursday evening’s publication by the U.S.-based Gawker website of some details related to the video was “false and defamatory.” Morris told the Star that by viewing any video it is impossible to tell what a person is doing. “How can you indicate what the person is actually doing or smoking?” Morris said.

Howard Stern Buys $52 Million Mansion in Palm Beach, According to Reports

Howard-Stern-Mansion(New Times) – Radio “shock jock” Howard Stern has reportedly bought himself a mansion in Palm Beach, according to Gossip Extra.

Someone purchased the lavish oceanfront home on 601 N. County Road for a whopping $52-million, according to sales records. And that someone is apparently Stern and his wife Beth Ostrosky.

It had been rumored that Stern, 59, was looking for a house in South Florida for sometime, but was reluctant to go through with it. Some reports said he was looking to get away from New York’s high income taxes. That and, of course, the weather, is usually why rich folk move down to SoFla.

The home Stern and his wife settled on, valued at a reportedly $40.8 million, is owned by New Hampshire textile mogul Martin Trust and his wife Diane.  The Trusts had the home constructed in 1992 on a 3.25 acre lot, according to property records.  Stern’s wife apparently visited Palm Beach on her own and fell in love with the Trust’s mansion, reports Gossip Extra.

The mansion, which is located in the lavish North Side of Palm Beach, has a reported 39,094 square feet of living space, with the main house measuring at 18,673 square feet.  Stern, it would seem, has settled himself in one of the world’s most exclusive neighborhoods, called “Raider’s Row,” where his new neighbors are Rush Limbaugh and corporate tycoon types.

Electric Daisy Carnival Creator Could Face Up to 13 Years in Prison

Pasquale Rotella(Rolling Stone) – Following his March arrest for an indictment including 29 counts of bribery, embezzlement, conspiracy and conflict of interest, court documents reveal that Electric Daisy Carnival creator and Insomniac Events CEO Pasquale Rotella could face up to 13 years and eight months in prison, Spin reports.

Rotella is one of six individuals charged in a colossal corruption case concerning Los Angeles’ historic stadium, the Coliseum, where the EDC has been held many times. According to L.A. District Attorney Steve Cooley, more than $2.5 million of Coliseum money was rerouted to the personal accounts of Coliseum Events Manager Todd DeStefano and General Manager Patrick Lynch via back-room deals.

“In 2008 DeStefano, [Go Ventures promoter Reza] Gerami, and Pasquale Rotella agreed that the two promoters would pay DeStefano personally and in exchange he would use his official position to provide them access to the Coliseum and low rates,” reads a court document submitted by Cooley. “Lynch learned of the payments in 2009 and . . . [assisted] him in continuing his crime.”

These charges are not the first to taint the EDC and the Coliseum. After attending the carnival at the Coliseum in 2010, 15-year-old Sasha Rodriguez died of ecstasy-related causes at a nearby hospital. Following her death, the L.A. Times looked into the Coliseum’s practices, which led to the city’s 13-month-long investigation that brought about Rotella’s indictment.

In the court document, Cooley draws a connection between the corruption and drug usage at events such as the EDC. “In the past, electronic music concerts, also known as raves, were generally conducted illegally, without permits and with rampant drug use,” he stated. “More recently their promoters have managed to bring the events to conventional venues but have faced resistance from the public due to continued drug use and other safety issues. The best way to overcome such resistance is always the use of an inside man.”

Rotella is currently out on bail. His attorney, Gary Kaufman, has issued a statement maintaining Rotella’s innocence, calling the charges “clearly politically motivated and publicity driven.” Insomniac claims none of their events will be impacted by the arrest.

Google Shows Off Upcoming Map Changes, Announces iPad App

google maps(PC Mag) – Later today, Google will kick off its annual Google I/O conference, an event that often offers an sneak peek at the newest projects and experiments the company has in the works. Things got off to an early start last night, however, when what appears to be the next version of Google Maps leaked online.

The launch screens for the new version of Google Maps appeared briefly, but have since been taken down. But Android-focused site Droid Life managed to capture screen shots of the leak before it disappeared. The new Google Maps seems to incorporate data from your Google account to highlight areas and locations that are important to you.

In addition to the automated location curation, the new maps also appears to add Google Flight Search into the traditional Google Maps product, allowing users to easily plan trips directly from the normal Google Maps screen rather than visiting a separate site. Perhaps the most interesting feature, though, is the inclusion of Google Earth as an option. This is a combination many fans of Google Maps have wanted for some time, but up until now the most realistic topographic images offered by Google Maps have been Street View and the satellite viewing option.

The ability to type in an address, zoom in to to that address on Street View, and then zoom out using Google Earth would likely end any discussion about which company has the best mapping software. If these leaked images turn out to be accurate in terms of showing off the real features of the new Google Maps, users will finally have what can easily be called the most powerful mapping software on the planet, bar none.

PCMag will be at Google I/O today, meanwhile, so tune in at noon Eastern for details from the opening keynote. Until then, see What to Expect at Google I/O 2013.

BitCoin Panic: Department of Homeland Security Shuts Down Dwolla Payments Of Mt. Gox

bitcoins(Before it’s News) – Dwolla users are unable to transfer money to and from leading Bitcoin trading platform Mt. Gox following a court order from the Department of Homeland Security.

Users of Dwolla’s money-moving service began receiving this message as of Tuesday afternoon, first posted on Twitter by OkCupid cofounder Chris Coyne and reported upon by Betabeat.

The Department Of Homeland Security appears to have shut down the ability to use Dwolla, a mobile payment service, to withdraw and deposit money into Mt. Gox, a Bitcoin trading platform. A Dwolla representative confirmed the move to Betabeat. Chris Coyne, cofounder of OKCupid, posted a screenshot of an email he received from Dwolla, stating that due to recent orders from the Department of Homeland Security, Dwolla cannot complete the bank transfer to Mt. Gox.

A representative for Dwolla told Betabeat that the company is “not party” to this matter and encourages those with questions to reach out to Mt. Gox or the DHS.

“The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland issued a ‘Seizure Warrant’ for the funds associated with Mutum Sigillium’s Dwolla account (a.k.a. Mt. Gox),” he said. “In light of the court order, procured by the Department of Homeland Security, Dwolla has ceased all account activities associated with Dwolla services for Mutum Sigillum while Dwolla’s holding partner transferred Mutum Sigillium’s balance, per the warrant.”

“Dwolla requires a court order before honoring requests such as seizing funds or revoking access to an account,” he added.
